Preliminary Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Denotation: The magazine cover consists of a young woman smiling directly into the camera. Its a medium shot. The woman is standing in a very green area and looks happy and relaxed. The background of the photograph is blurred so all emphasis is on the woman. This happy image connotes that education is happy.

Costume: The costume is very laid back. The top the woman is wearing is red and white it looks sporty. The woman may be part of a sports team. This links back to the colours in the masthead. The costume is quite funky and cool. This could be representation of education, that education is not all books and a really boring thing to do. Education can be fun.

Props: The woman is not standing with any books or props commonly attached to education, her non verbal communication is slouched, maybe the woman is taking education in her stride.

Setting: The setting looks like a park or playing fields. The picture looks as if it is set on a summers day. The setting is blurred but you can still see trees and grass. The setting in my opinion does not really connote 'school' or 'education'

NVC: The woman's non verbal communication is slouched and comfortable. The woman looks happy and comfortable in education.

Magazine connotations: The masthead is big and bold, its in a very vibrant red colour. This makes the masthead very distinctive and attracts the readers eye. The letters are all in caps and are spaced out from each other. The masthead suggests what the magazine is about. College is a word used globally and is globally known as an educational place. The date line is located in the top left hand corner it is in a white font and is not very distinctive. The main images runs through the center of the magazine front cover taking up most of the space. It is very difficult to distinguish the main cover line as all the stories advertised are all a similar font. The left third of the page has two stories and the bar code running down it. All the cover lines are quite symmetrical to each other. The bar code is easy to find and distinctive. The magazine cover is very simple. There is no apparent website link.

Induction: Movie Poster Textual Analysis

Costume: This poster is for Indiana Jones. The main character's costume looks scruffy and old. His costume looks as if the main character is some sort of archaeologist or explorer. The costume is also quite dated which suggests that the the film is set in the past.

Props: The whip the man in the photograph is holding suggests that he is ready to fight and that he is armed. The whip is also Indiana Jones trademark, for example spider man has an iconic costume, Indiana Jones has the whip.

Setting: The setting is fiery and desolate. The setting suggests that the film is an action adventure film. The setting looks ancient. The fiery background look as though the main character is cheating death. It looks like an abandoned cave or tomb.

Lighting: The lighting is dim and mysterious. This is connoting danger and violence.

NVC: The mans NVC is poised and strong. The low angle shots ads significance to the man. He looks more dominant and powerful.

Anchorage: The title of the film is in a very simple sans serif font. The title is also iconic of Indiana Jone's movies. The title's font is very different from the font below it, whilst 'Indiana Jones' may symbolise humor and the fact that its a family orientated movie the smaller text below it symbolises that all is not what it seems.

Induction: RE-Creation of a Movie Magazine Front Cover

I was given this first magazine cover from my teacher and I tried to recreate the magazine cover with a similar image. I found using photoshop quite hard. I had only used it once before and found it quite difficult at first and found myself getting frustrated with it. As the pictures are quite different. I had to use different font colors from the original magazine as the colour scheme on the images were different. I used tools such as 'move tool' and 'horizontal type tool', these tools helped me place and rearrange the different layers of texts I put on my magazine cover. I need to be more adventurous with photoshop and move away from just using basic photoshop tools. I think if I did this my work would look more professional.
